This is a wonderful box. 220 CDs that cover complete Bach. It is brilliantly laid out in separate parts giving organ, instrumental, cantata etc. Some of the recordings are historic. Casals in the first cello suite or Schweizer at the organ are example and Milstein and,Grumiaux are here along with Oistrakh. We hear Pires, Periaha, Argerich and Ashkenazy in piano works. There are equivalent harpsichord choices. It is endlessly interesting to compare different approaches to this music and this set allows for this. A good example of this is an 86 minute disc contains Gerdener, Hogwood and McCreech in the Magnificat. Timings are generally incredibly generous often up to 86 minutes.
I could go on but suffice to say this set offers years of great listening. I must mention that there are two books as well as the whole BWV catalogue. A big investment? Yes but save your pennies!
Beautifully box set, complete with texts for vocal works. Contains two versions of many works,
modern and traditional interpretations.
However the texts are in very small print.
This still makes this the most important Bach collection for many years to come.
