The Canon L2 was originally marketed in March of 1957 and is now a piece of photography history. A picture tells a thousand words, and a great camera can tell a thousand more. This one is a classic with plenty of tales already in it and yet more still left to tell. The L2 Rangefinder took the earlier VT Rangefinder style and added an advance lever to the top. The VT featured a trigger winder, and the L2 replaced that with a crank advance. The film advance operates with either single or partial strokes. The frame counter has readouts for 0 through 39, and it is shifted manually. The photo equipment has an indicator for the advance status. This 35mm camera has all-manual controls. Photographers will get photos that measure 24 by 36 mm in size when shooting with this classic piece of equipment. Lenses attach to the camera's body with a threaded mount. Standard lenses for this gear are Canon's 50mm f/1.2 lens and 50mm f/2.8 lens. The flash operates with FP-sync. That means that the bayonet terminal offers direct flash synchronization. The viewfinder has three magnification options. These are adjusted by rotation to help you as your focus on your photography subject. The L2 Rangefinder has a reversed Galilean viewfinder. A lever on the front of the camera is used for rewinding. The back of the device opens to remove or load the cartridge. Two steps are required for opening the back. This keeps you from accidentally popping it open and exposing what is inside. To open it, you must first adjust a dial at the bottom and then pull a small lever. The 35mm film medium loads onto a spool by hand. This is a focal-plane shutter camera. The 2-axis cloth shutters open and closed with a horizontal travel motion. The fastest shutter speed is 1/500 sec. Other speeds achieved with the single-axis rotating dial, which includes an index, are B, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, and 1/250 sec. There is another rotating dial that controls speeds of T, 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/15 sec.This camera also comes with a pop-up rewind film knob. The knob is recessed, so it will fold out of the way when you are not using it. When it is pushed down, it blends smoothly into the surface around it. To pop up the knob, there is a small lever for the photographer to push backward.The body of the Canon L2 is 143mm by 76mm by 34mm. It weighs 530 grams. Smooth, classic lines and a hardy composition make this Canon one to remember. It was a practical and affordable device when it was first introduced.
