Dependable Power Supply
This is one of my favorite Astron products. I have 2 Astron SS-30 power supplies, one without the meters and this one with the meters. I prefer meters to monitor power conditions. The power SS-30 without meters I have been using in my VHF ARES jump kit for nearly 10 years. It gets used for portable and emergency communications. This supply has never given a hint of a problem. It keeps working with power to spare. There is no noise on the DC and no radiated RFI detected by the IC-2000 or Mirage amplifier it powers. The metered SS-30 is also very reliable and produces no RFI on the DC output, nor does it radiate any RFI that can be detected by the IC-706MKIIG that it powers in my all band ARES jump kit that I also use portable and in my shack. As many know, these switching power supplies are much lighter than a comparable linear power supply. For those that are unfamiliar with Astron beware that Astron rates their power supplies at intermediate peak power and not normal full load. The SS-30 will operate at 25 amps continuously, but only 30 amps for peaks of one second durations or less. I have no problem recommending an Astron linear or switching power supply that is properly chosen for its intended load. I especially like the switching supplies because unlike many of the other switching supplies on the market these are extremely quiet in an RF application. Many other brands of switching power supplies create noise that if it is not on the DC it is radiated and the radio will detect it.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Disappointed will not buy it again
I ordered this item because it was recommended to me. Once it arrived I hooked it up, to find out the lead power cables connectors in the back of the unit were a cheap set screw plug. And the red (positive) side will not screw tight. Very disappointed!! I have never seen this type of connection so I’m now looking into making my own connections for it totally remodeling. I should not have to do this on a new item but I don’t want to have be hassled with warranty and if they even have people that care to make it right. Bad designVerified purchase: YesCondition: New

Astron SS-30M , 13.8vdc, 30 amps
I have owned the power supply for a short time, but it has worked flawlessly. I hear no electronically generated noise. I use this power supply with several different radios. Ten Tec, Kenwood, Icom. The only thing I would like to see added is an automatic shut down circuit for power over draw at 20 amp, 25 amp and 30 amp to protect radio and power supply like Ten Tec designed in to their original supplies. 3 different outputs would be useful, if the engineer happens to read this. If you are in need of a primary or a back up supply, give this one some real consideration. The Meters are a real help. Hard to find a nice unit like this for less than 120.00. There are other companies out there making cheaper supplies, but you have to consider whether they are going to supply your needs with out generating noise. SS Power Supply
I purchased this Astron SS-30M to replace an old Astron RS-35 that died after many years of use. Since it would be hooked up to my new Icom 7300, I didn't want to risk any damage to the 7300 and went looking for a "New" power supply and checked out the reviews of switching power supplies, I found that most reviews state that while some computer switching supplies will work, they create spurious RF noise and should not be used, but that high quality switching power supplies like the Astron SS series do not produce this type of problem. I shopped around and found this one on eBay for $120 +shipping. The three things I noticed right away. 1. The terminals are the clamp type, not the old lug style with nuts & washer, this means the radio wire(s) will only require striping & tinning to insert into the power supply terminals and tighten the clamping screws, this uses the only terminals on the power supply, if you need to hook up anything else to this power supply you’ll have to use a terminal block. 2. The voltage is adjustable by a screw on the side of the unit. 3. The meters are large and bright. The only thing I would add to this power supply is an adjustment for the brightness of the meter lights.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Compact Size with Nice Feature Set
The 30 Amp Power Supply offers Good Power and the Compact Size is Perfect for my Bench. The Dual Meters is a Plus, but the New Adjustable DC Output Feature is what Really got my Attention. The Only item I would like to see different is to have the DC Adjustment on the Front instead of the Side of the Unit, but still having the Adjustable Output for a 30 Amp Power Supply is a Good New Addition to an already Great Quality Product.
