Thule 5603 Roof Bar Pads for light duty loads only....
A lot of modern roof bars are so called wing shaped, and have a built in top soft strip or available with pads to protect loads being carried. If you have more traditional "square" Thule bars, OE bars, Rhino bars or standard fitments bars such as available on eBay, then the 5603 Thule Roof Bar Pads may proved a way to protect loads such as surf boards, etc. We go camping a lot and have used these roof bar pads for carrying kit on square bars fitted to four wheel drives and SUVs. A tough outer covering has a lace at each end which can be undone to fit over your bar without having to take the bar off, in most cases, see next paragraph as well. Just hold the button in on the lace retainer, similar to the draw cord stops you get on coats, and keep it pressed and pull the laces till almost out. Now fit the protector by pulling it open so the inner part of it wraps around the bar and release. Once the protector is on the bar the laces now need putting around the bar as well. Press the lace retainer, and pull the laces through. Keeping the retainer pressed in one hand, you pull the laces around the underside of the bar, then feed back through and tighten the laces, release the lace retainer. Do one pad end at a time, and on taller vehicles, such as SUVs, MPVs, vans, etc; take care reaching to do this. Should you be uncertain or need help to do this ask a competent person to assist you. On some vehicles it may worth unclipping or clamping the roof bars to fit load protectors safely. The inner material is a closed cell foam similar to that used for pipe lagging and is quite tough and "water proof". The outer cover has the familiar Thule logo on it and the material is strong but is not cut proof or abrasive resistant. Once fitted the only thing you need to do is make sure the laces are tight and then tuck them inside the pads out covering. Important : The pads do not give any attachment to your roof bars for your load. The pads do not grip the bars latterly and therefore will slide along the bar. In some cases without the proper use of straps this means some loads can move during transportation and additional stops should be fitted depending on your make of bar. For what it is designed for these pads are good and easy to use, however they are not built for carrying heavy loads or anything with sharp edges. In conclusion the 5603 Roof Bars Pads do what they say on the label, do not expect anything more, so in no particular order : Good Points : As useful light duty product that helps protect items such as pre wrapped timber, surf boards, oars, etc. Has the cool factor being Thule. Easy to fit in most cases. Bad Points : Material is not super tough. Slides on the roof bars. Fiddly to fit in some cases depending on size of vehicle.
