This is the simplest way to add a fully routed IP interface to a Cisco router. I use these cards in 1900 and 2900 series routers, but they are compatible with other series as well. At least in some "lower" router models, only one EHWIC-1GE-SFP-CU can be used (a second identical card is not recognized, but different types of card can work together). The SFP receptacle must be enabled in software. I use third-party multimode fiber SFP transceivers without problems. The speed LED only flashes once with a 1G optical transceiver. I don't know if this happens also with Cisco transceivers, but aside from this, the transceiver works perfectly at 1G. According to Cisco, there is also a card with just the SFP receptacle (no RJ45 socket), but I never saw it on eBay. Like most Cisco hardware, this seems to be built well and with ample temperature tolerances.Read full review
