ReviewsA fine new translation. . . . Bawdy, colloquial and wondrously inventive, the tales have influenced such disparate writers as John Barth, D. M. Thomas, Jorge Luis Borges, and Martin Amis, all of whom have embraced Shahrazad as the ultimate symbol of the storyteller's art., The resourceful Shahrazad . . . has never been more entertaining than in this fresh and vigorous version of this immortal book.

SynopsisThe tales portray a world of magic, wish-fulfillment and pleasure, depicting the marriage of the supernatural to the ordinary and the sacred to the profane.
For those who have read, or plowed through, the older versions of the Arabian Nights, they will find this to be a special pleasure. It has continuity, bringing our renowned story teller and her sister repeatedly back into focus, indicating where she leaves off, enticing the desire for continuation … and, accordingly, putting off her demise. Furthermore, the English is understandable and flows naturally, making the reading much easier. Still better, certain terms like Wazir are given their current and correct names, dispelling confusion. Lastly, the translation corrects many mistakes previously ground into the text. Get both volumes I & II. Hopefully this will be printed in hardback for treasured safekeeping.
Classic literature from antiquity and entertaining today as it was then!
Husain Haddawy has he best translation that I have read. Now he is teamed up with Mr. Mahdi. I would believe that if they teamed up it will be good. I'm stocking up on these for Christmas presents.
Arabian Nights is a great read, love it and recommend it.
