Stop trying to solder small components with a "Wellington boot"
For 0.1" spaced pin components and smaller, this makes soldering so much easier and neater. Get some 0.5mm solder wire too, and an illuminated magnifying desk lamp. I used to use a 2.3mm soldering bit and 1.0mm solder wire for everything. That's fine to have on-hand for larger components, but makes life hard and frustrating for smaller stuff.
