To be good (this is an uphill struggle). My likes: Living at the Green Gables with Marilla and Matthew, my bosom-friend Diana, dresses with puff sleeves. My regrets: Dying my hair green. Smashing a slate over Gilbert Blythe'e(tm)s head.

  • Good read for girls.

I read this for research purposes about the stage version because, although it is definitely a book for girls and rated a classic, I had never read it when I was a child. I probably started it and got no further than the entrance of Anne. There is a lot of dewy-eyed romantic description of the Canadian scenery, but Anne herself is insufferably garrulous. I understand this story is extremely popular in Japan as a theme for weddings, and couples travel thousands of miles to marry at the real Green Gables. But seriously, this is an acquired taste and having read about a third and gained the information I needed, I did stop reading. Having said this, as a book it still demands a 5star rating because it is a well written, thick book that should keep a girl-child absorbed for hours. It is just that I can't stand the character of Anne.

  • Got me back into reading

I discovered Anne of Green Gables as an adult and it became an instant favourite (the entire series, that is – this is just book one). I am sure I would have adored it as a child and as a teenager, had I known it existed. I was a great reader as a child, but in my early teens I was put off reading by the books we were asked to read and were examined on in school. And what a shame! Anne of Green Gables just came into my life one day and since then I'm reading more than ever before. I have read reviews by people who dislike Anne's character and all I can say is, give her time. Her character develops beautifully throughout the books. If you still can't grow to like her however, try Emily of New Moon, it's dubbed the "darker Anne".
