But it wasn't all the infamous Dr Beeching. It was not until the oil crises of the early 1970s that the process was brought to a close. Later chapters look at the reopening process that has continued on and off ever since.
The book is well written and makes a fascinating read, although how much of what happened to Britain's public railway system, in particular the loss of mileage and places served, can be put down to conspiratorial thinking and how much to good old British short-termism is a moot point. Excellent background information though; recommended.
