Gets you by without matches, but at the expense of SAFETY! Please read review for details.
The idea of this lighter is much better than how it works in practice depending on the model of lantern you have. I had this item on a 200A (single mantle lantern), and it worked well on that one, so I figured it would also work well with a 295 (2-mantle lantern). The instructions for the 295 state that you should have a lit match in lantern chamber before opening the gas valve, and for very good reason. With this method, the flame is present before the gas arrives, and the mantle will "gently" light as soon as the gas accumulates enough to light. Using the flint lighter, the gas is present before the spark, and if you don't light it IMMEDIATELY and too much gas is present, the mantle will light "violently" in the form of a LARGE flame "pop" that can come out of the vent holes and possibly burn you slightly. I lost some hair on my fingers as a result, but no significant burn. Had more gas been present, the "pop" could have been even bigger, although I'm not sure if there is an explosion hazard or not. So I view this as a safety concern, and I recommend that this lighter be used as a backup in an instance that a gas lighter/matches are not available.
As I mentioned earlier, this item worked well on a 200A. There is still the risk of the "violent" LARGE flame "pop", but the 200A seems to be more forgiving in the amount of time you have between when you open the gas and when you need to make a spark.
Be safe everyone!
