Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0
This Bachmann Consolidation engine and tender is a welcome N scale offering, especially for a company known for making cheap train sets in the past. This engine, along with many of their other new train offerings, hopefully marks a departure point for Bachmann into more realistic, functional N scale engines. The detailing on this model is superb. Engine and tender handrails are fine yet strong wire separately applied, not molded into the plastic shell. The plastic details along the boiler sides are made of a stiff yet flexible plastic able to give when bent but not break. On the model I bought, the third set of driver wheels had a wobble which I was able to fix with shims made of metallic tape. The wobble made the engine unsteady as it ran and actually could derail it. I would not recommend this fix to someone without skill in disassembling a small steam engine like this. However after the fix, the engine ran perfectly - smooth and quiet. It's seems as powerful as any of the larger N scale steam engines. Overall, a 5 star model for performance, looks, and durability. Good job Bachmann.
