America around 1870: The rough cattle rancher 'Big' John Cannon settles with his family on a piece of land in Arizona and builds the High Chaparral ranch there. When his wife is killed in an Apache attack and is also threatened by the hostile Mexican landowner Don Sebastian Montoya, Big John's dream of a peaceful coexistence between whites, Mexicans and Indians is severely endangered. In order to keep the peace for his unpredictable brother Buck Cannon and his son Billy Blue, Big John finally accepts Don Montoya's condition for an alliance between the ranchers and marries his much younger daughter Victoria. Together with her brother Manolito, the beautiful Victoria accompanies her new husband to High Chaparral, where the Cannons slowly pull themselves together and together face the numer.
