Is the Olympus VF3 Electronic viewfinder useful?
The Olympus VF3 electronic viewfinder works really well. It hasn’t got a super high resolution, but it beats trying to see something on the LCD screen in the sunshine. If you feel the need for that higher resolution, and want to pay for that, you may consider the much more expensive VF4.
The finder slides smoothly into, and has a nice tight fit in the accessory shoe, then locks in. Push a button on the side to release it. A dial on the side let’s you set the dioptres so you do not need to wear your glasses. A push button on the back activates the finder, and at the same time switches the LCD screen off. Push it again and your screen is back.
The finder swivels up to 90 degrees, which can be very handy where your subject, and your camera for that matter, is in a low position, for instance when photographing children or animals. It is nice and compact, whereas the VF4 is more bulky, less elegant.
Never having used one of these before, it was a surprise to me, that the finder actually gives a brighter image than any objects that are in fact in darker situations, which makes manual focusing significantly easier.
So I can definitely recommend this viewfinder. It was my choice because it was less expensive than the VF4, but even more because of the compact and elegant model. If you are not sure if you want or need the higher resolution VF4 finder, you need to go to your photo-shop, and compare the both of them. I am happy with it!
Good luck!
