the price was very cheap..the quality was very good with a superb blue paint job which made them usable in the lounge if need be...everything was brilliant except for putting together because the thickness of the paint meant you had to use a fine screwdriver head to ease in to the slots on 70% of the joints and there are about 80 bits to slot in, took me 40 mins each one where i also had a plain basic non coated metal one which took me less then 15 minutes due to no paint making the slotting in tighter...but i would not want the basic metal coloured ones on show...i am buying more for a neighbour of the blue ones but not looking forward to putting together

First off, this is really great value if you don't need heavy duty racking. I couldn't find anything near this value. The downside is that it is a little flimsy, especially when you're putting it together. The tabs that slot into the frames are often difficult to get to slide in properly, as the instructions tell you to do. I had to use screwdriver several times to get it to work by prising the slot open a little more. I also decided to change the level of a shelf while constructing, which quickly became a big hassle. Because of the shape of the tab, and the tightness of the fit, when I went to slide the shelf up, it became caught against the slot and tore. I had to bend the tear off to remove the shelf. It can also be a little fiddly getting the shelves to level perfectly, because of the tricky tab/slot system. Finally, the feet seem to have a tendency to fall off when you move the shelf around, so you'll want to build it near to where you want to use it, and get the shelf levels right first time. I think I'll have to chuck it rather than dismantle it when I move.Read full review

I have bought several of the BigDug shelves of different types and sizes over the years. t has always amazed me as to how strong these shelves are. They are very basic and simple in design, but they do hold heavy weights. When assembling them you do need to make sure that they are fully assembled by using a rubber mallet or they can start to fall apart when you move them around. Once fully assembled they are very sturdy and do an excellent job for their money.

These were easy enough to put together and are surprisingly rigid. I strapped them together with some zip ties to make them more solid but you can also fasten them to a wall etc. I would recommend wearing some work gloves as some of the edges of the metal are sharp.

For the price I paid, £20, I’d recommend this product, say it was value for money and say it was good enough quality but I wish I’d spent a bit more and bought another unit. Reasons: instructions were not helpful at all and I had to google others to put it together; the structure is essentially one section on top of the other and is not particularly stable even with the shelves in place; the shelves are chip board and come in two pieces so they may in time become damp and don’t offer as much support as one piece might. All in all if buying again I’d purchase one with metal shelves and one piece of framing height wise to make building easier and stability better.
