To be honest I didn't really expect this lens to be amazing due to it's wide zoom range and apertures. I thought that the best I could hope for were reasonable shots that became passable at longer focal lengths. Especially at the price. But I was so wrong.
This lens has it's limits. It hunts for focus at times and I have missed shots because of that. It is slow to lock on and when it does, unless you have the focus mode set right, it can focus on the wrong thing. But once I sorted out the focus settings the lens was simply brilliant.
As a travel lens it gave great results and the clarity and sharpness of images was quite stunning.More than I could have hoped for in a lens of this design.
Before owning Sony system cameras I had Canon and Nikon, and the lens quality was always impeccable. This lens is a match for those and surpasses some I have used before. The only lens that was better was the Canon L lenses. But then, this lens was far cheaper and has far more flexibility.
Anyone who buys this lens will not be disappointed unless they are looking for top quality professional results in a general all round zoom lens.
As a travel lens I couldn't fault it. You get a lot more than you pay for.
It's not a Canon L lens, but it is a remarkable Sony travel lens. Enjoy!Read full review
I have given this an average rating only because if I give it more the sites says "better than expected". How can I say better when I had no idea what to expect or anything to compare it with? I can say it is heavier than I thought, but due to the stability mechanisms in the camera/lens it is okay hand held for what I do using a reasonable speed and ISO setting. The images can be sharp, I say can, because at times I do not always get the focus area where I want, or, the subject is too small. For instance I tried to get a squirrel looking through some branches, the branches were really sharp 9proving the lens is okay) but the squirrel out of focus, which was not the lens fault. Price wise it is quite a bit dearer than I have paid previously for Sony lenses but have discovered the E-mounts are dearer than the A-mounts. For the price I would have liked the lens to go up to at least 300mm but overall happy as I was not going to use a different make of lens, I do like Sony products. Read full review
Very good all around lens, it's ok for one lens to a full travel. If you zoom in (100mm+), it could do very nice portraits on full frame, with a nice bokeh. Generally it's very versatile, and the stabilization (OSS) works very effectively, I can do portraits indoor, low light at 1/30s with 240mm!
What a great lens I’ve got my prime lenses but I needed
A lens that could cope with my hectic photography Landscapes to twitching, it does with great handheld shots with fantastic results. Got to be the best travel lens ever.
