Tool for the job but overpriced

The DID Chain Cutter and Riveter is really well built, very easy to use and works really well. It is built to last and comes in a metal case which is handy for keeping the parts together. This tool is clearly built to last and quality engineering. I'm confident I'll never need to buy another. The only questionable part is the rivet extractor pin. This is potentially liable to bend if user is not careful. This is not a criticism of the tool, the pin is necessarily thin - but it is tough and should be fine if used properly with care. The good thing is you can purchase the parts separately so a pin can be replaced if necessary, There are other tools on ebay etc that look like exact copies - but half the price. whether the copies are just as good or inferior I don't know. As good as the DID tool is, it is in my opinion over-priced. But what you do get is assurance of a robust, precise, quality product.

    Chain breaker

Driving pin bent then broke pushing out a rivet link. I think it’s a bit hit and miss getting a good casting on the pin some ok some not. It’s still perfectly usable to join a chain and I’d imagine very good at it. Long term invest in a genuine d.i.d but for occasional use you could take your chances

  • DiD chain tool

I got a new DID x ring chain for my bike, bought a cheap “DID style” cutting and riveting tool. This turned out to be a mistake as the DID style tool bent when trying to rivet the chain link. A new chain link and a proper DID tool later, my chain riveted perfectly with the branded tool. My opinion is don’t buy a cheap £20 did style tool as the chain needs to be correctly riveted in the case it could break when in use and damage the bike or worse the rider… but the proper DID tool for the DID chain. I followed the instructions for use in both tools cases to the letter, thus I know for sure the cheap version was garbage and made from cheese. Putting the did style tool and the proper did tool side by side, it becomes very evident that the cheap one is made roughly and cheaply. As far as the proper DID tool goes, does what it says on the tin, works as expected. It’s an expensive tool but you get what you pay for.

  • Far better than expected and works very well.

I was sceptical when I purchased this as I know how much the genuine DID item costs. I was therefore pleasantly surprised when it arrived and was far better quality than I had expected. I needed to split a new DID 525 VX chain and although the sales pitch does recommend that you grind off rivets before you use this tool I decided to try the job without doing so and had no problem whatsoever. I split and relinked the chain easily quickly and with no problems at all using this tool. I would recommend that anyone who buys one downloads the instructions on its use from DID website as this makes using the tool a lot easier and explains every step to using the tool/ In summary a very good tool at a very good price. Wish I had purchased one years ago.

  • Worth paying for quality

I had a copy of this from a major spares retailer, only lasted for about four chains before it gave up. the two halves would separate before the pin was fully riveted. I shouldn't have tried to save a few quid, this was over twice the cost of the copy, but works so much better, and feels like it will last forever.

  • Right tool for the job.

If you insist on a chain for your final drive and you prefer to do your own maintenance, this is the right tool for the job. Solid well made and removes the need to grind the link. Easy to gain confidence in breaking and riveting and reassuring to know the job is well done.

  • Followed a YouTube video to use this and...

Followed a YouTube video to use this and it worked perfectly to put a chain on. Haven't used it to remove a chain yet, but it's a very solid, well-made item.
