  • Very good receiver

I ordered this to check out the ham bands to see if I would be interested in ham radio. I found out that I was and ordered some ham transceivers. This is a high quality receiver and receives on all bands. It gets the all ham bands plus AM-FM and FSK. Very good audio and a quiet receiver. I like it a lot but since I used it for what I wanted to do and bought a transceiver I no longer need it and am going to put it up for sale. For anybody looking for a excellent receiver on all bands this is a very good receiver to buy. I highly recommend the Kenwood R-5000. Greg

  • Kenwood R 5000

Great radio! So much better then the new plastic case toys they are selling these days. It is a notch bellow my Icom R 75 but look how long ago the Kenwood was built. Solid radio, if you can get one in good condition Grab it! A pleasure to use and has the nice warm glow of it's display like a vintage stereo receiver. Still up to par with today's radios and blows away the plastic Grundig junk.

  • Great receiver, timeless!

Love the Kenwood R-5000, easy to learn and operate, many upgrades are still available and they are also easy to install yourself. The only issue that I had read about this model was the keyboard bounce problem, which seemed upon first look to occur in all of the units. It turns out that the bounce problem is caused by the electrolytic capacitors drying out, this is widely known, and kits are available for a modest price to replace all of the caps, a fairly tedious process (I was a technician for 7 years before becoming an engineer, now retired). I have only once seen the true cause stated in an opinion piece, and I fully concur: the unit runs very hot when powered by the internal AC power supply, and this excessive heat is detrimental to the longevity of the capacitors. My 5000 has the optional DC power kit DCK-2 DC, and I use an external 12 volt power supply to provide the modest 2 amps it requires. The result is that the unit runs so cool that is difficult to detect any heating when touching the unit, causing the capacitors to last the 6 or more decades they were intended for. Moral of the story: buy a unit with the 12 volt accessory even if you don't plan to use it!
