About this product

Product Information

From the New York Times bestselling author of Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, a startling challenge to our thinking about depression and anxiety. Award-winning journalist Johann Hari suffered from depression since he was a child and started taking anti-depressants when he was a teenager. He was told - like his entire generation - that his problem was caused by a chemical imbalance in his brain. As an adult, trained in the social sciences, he began to investigate this question - and he learned that almost everything we have been told about depression and anxiety is wrong. Across the world, Hari discovered social scientists who were uncovering their real causes - and they are mostly not in our brains, but in the way we live today. Haris journey took him from a life-threatening experience in Vietnam, to an Amish community in Indiana, to an uprising in Berlin - all showing in vivid and dramatic detail these new insights. They lead to radically different solutions to the ones we have been offered up to now. Just as Chasing The Scream transformed the global debate about addiction, The Lost Connections will lead us to a very different debate about depression and anxiety - one that shows how, together, we can end this epidemic.

THIS BOOK LITERALLY CHANGED MY LIFE.

This book literally changed my life!!!!!!. Since the year 2000, I had been medicated for depression. I was told I had an Imbalance of Serotonin and was medicated for many years . I was in a bookshop and a sales assistant was stacking the shelves. She must have moved the books because, this book fell out at my feet. I picked it up and because of the title, I read the first chapter. I read the book in two days, so I read it again and it really sunk in. I 'weaned' myself off my medication and basically said goodbye to my Psychiatrist.........that was five years ago!. I am still not medicated and I am doing really well without being in a medicated 'fog'. This book is not necessarily for everybody,as I realise there are a lot of different cases to me BUT, in my case, medication didn't allow me to get better, it only masked my symptoms. I have just bought this book, for a friend, who I am helping get through depression and it's working for him too. I will not lend my original book to anyone as, it is so special to me and it allowed me to see, just what it was, that caused my depression. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

  • Most critical review

A compelling read in general psychology that ends well.

Great to have this depth of analysis of a problem so rampant in society today backed up with the past 20 years of good solid research into why people feel this way. Well written to absorb how as individuals we can be part of this solution to this problem.
