About this product

Product Information

An aviation-obsessed engineer named Jiro Horikoshi (Hideaki Anno) has loved the aesthetics, spirit, and science of flight for as long as he can remember. For years he's been designing and building his dream plane, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, and it's finally completed. But Jiro's dreams come crashing down when he learns, to his horror, that his creation will be used for combat in World War II.

ReviewsTampa Bay Times - This is a gorgeous production, Charlotte Observer - The film is visually sumptuous, morally ambiguous, dramatic and dreamlike, with a narrative as engrossing as any live-action movie of 2013. ItÆs easy to follow yet hard to shake., Slant Magazine - Even if Hayao Miyazaki's career is complete, a work like this serves to remind us of the shining beacons he's left behind him, the testaments to pursuing beauty in the face of so much ugliness, themselves lasting reminders of the quiet rewards of determination.

  • Beautifully animated and an interesting story.

I’m not sure why this is not available on the streaming services in the UK, but in any case the blu-ray gives the crispest most colourful rendering of the peerless Studio Ghibli animation. This is both more interesting because it is a true story, and less compelling because real life rarely has the clear narrative thrust of fiction. Watch if you like the studio’s style or are interested in the history.
