About this product

Product Information

The Canon EOS EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is designed to be used with Canon’s APS-C Sensor SLR cameras. The lens is the equivalent of a 28-85mm lens on a full-size sensor or 35mm camera. That’s a very usable range that extends from a moderate 18mm wide angle to a shorter 55mm telephoto. What’s more, the long end of the range is a near perfect portrait lens. In fact, the EF-S 18-55mm makes a great general purpose zoom lens that covers the most commonly used focal length range. This quality Canon lens features an STM in its design. STM stands for Stepping Motor, a nearly silent autofocus motor technology that was developed specifically with video in mind. This updated technology was designed to work better with Canon DSLR cameras that have video recording capabilities. Canon's STM autofocus provides smooth and continuous autofocus, but you never hear this nearly silent motor running during playback. In addition to offering continuous autofocus during video, the Canon EF-S boasts an improved optical design with 13 lenses in 11 groups when paired with a body using a hybrid CMOS autofocus. The front element doesn't rotate or extend during focusing, which is a great convenience when you’re using polarizing filters to add photo enhancement. Canon increased the zoom ring as well as the manual focus ring on this EOS EF-S lens to make them both easier to use. There's no need for mechanical linkages to the focus ring because it is strictly “focus by wire.” Turning it sends a signal to the motors to electronically change the position. The system is effective once you get the hang of manual focus. The short minimum focusing distance of just under 10 inches is effective when working at closer distances. The maximum aperture for this EF-S STM lens is f/3.5 at the 18mm end of the range. That moves to f/5.6 at the telephoto setting, which is normal for a variable aperture lens. With the built-in image-stabilization system, that maximum opening is effectively stretched by another four stops. The image-stabilization system uses servo motors to move elements of the lens and compensate for camera movement. This feature helps to greatly improve image quality in low-light situations. Like the autofocus system, the image stabilization is nearly silent and isn’t heard when recording in video modes. In addition, the image does not jump around in the frame, so it results in recordings of better quality. Weighing just over 7 ounces and measuring just about 3 inches wide, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is one of the smallest and lightest standard lenses that Canon offers. To reduce the overall weight, the construction mostly consists of plastic. Despite its plastic construction, it still has a solid and substantial feel.

    Great IQ

In spite of my preference for L lenses, USM lenses and full frame lenses, this EF-S lens is a real beauty for what it is. I would like to see a faster lens, f/2.8 or so, but given the high ISO capability of the 70D I am using it on it is good enough. The focus is fast, accurate and with the STM motor designed for quite video recording it is silent. The light weight has been a positive feature also. The price was right for me and it works like a champ. I really wasn't expecting a lens at this price range to be this good. It is a cheap build (and the price reflects that), but my experience with other Canon EF-S lens is it should give a long life of service if not abused.

Front glass is different than original lens

It was to replace the original ESF 18-55mm. For some reason it does not sync with the auto focus system of my Canon camera. Basically it’s useless to me and I’ve gone back to my original lens which has cracked Off parts that allows it to securely engage camera

  • A quite necessary basic kit lens within everyone's reach.

It keeps its focus quite accurate, it provides quite sharps images in all its apertures and focusing distances. Not bad for a basic lens. Hopefully the canon gave us the opportunity to access an objective like this, but with an f /2.8, at a reasonable price and not so expensive. There three photos taken with that Canon EF-S 18-55mm 18-55 f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens mounted on a Canon 77D, camera. The photos have a minimal retouching in Photoshop CS6

  • Better than the lenses which preceded it.

This replaced my original kit lens on my Canon T2i, on which the auto focus died. The STM provides a much smoother and quieter focus, a bonus if I do take videos. I had not really thought about it before, but the older lens turns the glass while focusing - this one does not. Thus, if I had a special filter on it, like a polarizer, I was setting it, then focusing with the old lens, therefore ultimately not getting the exact effect I desired. That alone was worth skipping past the Model II to a like-new STM for not much more. I have not used it enough yet to claim that the image results are superior to my former lens, but I do a lot of close-up flower photography and so far things look very good.

  • Sharp And Lightweight!

This lens is an introductory lens in the field of SLRs, but it does not skimp on quality! Although lightweight, it has 13 elements in 11 groups and has Image Stabilization. It is very sharp, and the STM focusing is quick and quiet. It is highly regarded by amateurs and professionals alike. This is a lens for everybody, and covers the most usable field of view.

  • As good as new

I bought this lens as a replacement for the same model lens that shipped with my Canon T1i DSLR. The auto-focus on the original lens had stopped working, so I needed to replace it. This lens just as well as the one it replaces. In fact, the autofocus seems to react a little faster and the focus motor is definitely quieter than the original. This is a very versatile lens. Good for close-ups with a little bit of zoom when you need it.

  • Canon EFS 18-55mm IS STM

I purchased this lenses for my old DLSR 40D & 60D for daily use. It is very light and comfortable to carry. Images captured is fairly good. The focusing is very quiet, almost no sound.

  • It's a perfect entry level lens, that is...

It's a perfect entry level lens, that is far superior to the Canon stock 55mm. I have read a lot of complaints about the noise that the step motor makes, but it was so quiet that I thought that it wasn't working. I could see visually, that it was continuously adjusting the focus...brilliantly.

  • Excellent lens

Was a bit hesitant getting this lens afte buying my SL2/200D, but I must say I haven't regretted it. I initially wasn't inclined to using it that much. Decided to take only this lens with me one day and I was amazed by the performance. And at the price you can pick it up......If you're thinking about it, go for it. Started me out well in the photography journey. Thanks 18-55mm

  • Replaced 5 year old version of same lens

Wow--quite an improvement over our old version of this lens. The STM focusing motor is absolutely silent and faster than our old lens. The focus is sharp and image very good. Terrific lens!
