Reviews3 Stars-Good-"...It's All a Treat...", Highly Recommended - "...easily one of the finest discs of the year....makes Pearl Jam seem like long-haired New Kids in comparison..."
Buy the Double for the Live at the Album Hall Concert & then mix your own version
Buy this for the "Live at the Albert Hall Concert" which is Disc 2. That is ELP as you expect it belting out the classics and sounding as good as ever. Greg's voice has changed little surprisingly and Keith just flies over those keyboards especially his solo's and impromptu break into 'Flight of the Bumble Bee'
Black Moon the album on the other hand and which is disc 1, as an album is a good album - but it is not ELP. Instead its someone producing ELP and putting their stamp on them - and unfortunately its evident and it totally spoils it. Nothing wrong with it, but Greg isn't the producer so the expert is not in the driving seat and as a result it is not ELP as you would expect - its sound is way too commercial. No way can it hold a candle to "Tarkus" or "Triology" or "Brain Salad Surgery" or even "Works". 'Romeo and Juliet' is probably the closest to a return of classical given the ELP touch and makeover but its just not enough. Buy the album by all means but don't buy and expect another Tarkus or anything like it or you will be very disappointed. This is more along the lines of the Love Beach sound without even an Officer and a Gentleman to redeem it. Truthfully the best way to enjoy it and Love Beach for that matter is to mix the best tracks from both albums together and then make your own version. Combine that with the 'Live at the Albert Concert disc and you have an ELP collection worth listening to and worthy of any collection.
