  • DS6707-SR20401ZZR: Great device! Lightweight, fast, accurate, long cord. 1 programming oddity discovered.

This review is for DS6707-SR20401ZZR hand scanners, but information within will likely be applicable to most DS6707 devices. Attached photos relevant to programming and appearance of an active scanner, which I explain in detail below. In all, I found these scanners to be good purchase, and flexible enough in programming to adapt to our growing business needs. Programming these may require some patience and a modicum of technical aptitude, but I would not call it complicated. This is best done/easiest by using the 123Scan2 configuration utility provided by Zebra. Issues encountered, and their solutions: I ran into a problem with Code 39 bar codes that contained a CR/LF/Enter key embedded at the end of each bar code. I needed to program these DS6707's to ignore that CR/LF. I had already ensured they were programmed to just send raw data (without any prefix or suffix.) I diligently went over the lengthy ADF programming manual. I Contacted Zebra support, but they took days to respond to my inquiry. After much trial and error, I discovered a working the solution on my own. The Zebra 123Scan2 configuration utility - DOES NOT - properly discover the scanner when connected to USB. Furthermore, if you type in the full model, it will report that it has no matching configuration for that model of scanner. Instead you need to select "My scanner is not connected". Select the DS6707 series icon. Next use the plug-in called "DS6707-COMMON MODELS" release 16 with firmware version NBRPUCAQ. (The latest release available at the time of this writing.) To fix the unexpected CR/LF, in the Modify Data configuration tab, select Advanced, click Edit. Create an advanced rule to remove leading zeros then send all that remains. Somehow, magically, the rule to strip leading zeros (even when there are none in the scanned Code 39 bar code) also stops it from reading the CR/LF at the end of the bar code. Note: My rule was only applied to Code 39 bar codes. I left all other bar code settings at default.) For some other departments, they needed that CR/LF/Enter key after the scan. I accomplished this this by enabling the scanner to send the Enter key as a suffix after the bar code is scanned, while still trimming any leading zeros. To date this solution has worked perfectly. Zebra support did not offer any solution or explanation as to why my seemingly obtuse solution worked. Instead they informed me the bar code scanner models ending with SR20401ZZR are not publicly sold models. It get the feeling support for these models will be limited. However, if you take the time to understand the 123Scan2 utility, you will most likely find the solution yourself. It's also probably worth mentioning that if I had 'normal' code 39 bar codes I may have had no problem at all. Other noteworthy features: With Windows 7 the scanner's USB device drivers installed without any issue. When printing the programming bar codes from 123Scan2, it seemed to work best to set the bar code type to 1d with 1 setting per bar code, and to set defaults (rather than factory defaults) with the mil size set to Large. The USB cable length is generous. Something like 7 feet (easily 10 feet if you stretch/expand the strain relief coil.) This scanner has a very nice targeting reticle that appears when holding the scanner. If you set the scanner down, this turns off after a few seconds. When using the scanner in dark areas, the reticle did not always activate. Increasing the light in the room fixed this problem. The scanner will still scan on trigger press even when the reticle is not active. I have attached a picture showing this feature.
