Absurdity, fun, disappointment and a fantastic bike
If you're looking for something that's a touch different, 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure' may well be worth a look. Pee Wee Herman is best described as a grown-up child, with a fairly care-free nature and interest in practical jokes and magic tricks. His world is populated by toys, bizarre contraptions, a variety of unusual characters and very special bike. When this bike is stolen, Pee Wee departs on a cross-country road trip in the hopes of finding it.
This was Tim Burton's directorial debut. In the thirty years since it was made, it has definitely aged; it seems slow-paced and Pee Wee seems a little more disturbing than fun. There are a few funny moments, a scare and enough absurdity to warrant the film's cult following.
As a child, it was fascinating to me; as an adult, I was a little disappointed to see the film didn't live up to memory. It also failed to make any impression on my own children.
The DVD only seems to be available in non-English packaging, but includes the film (in English and subtitles in a variety of languages), deleted scenes and a director's commentary.
