Vitamin supplements are a good way to boost deficiencies. However, taking too much of any can cause unwanted health risks. Vitamin D in excess can lead to liver problems, which is why I think it best to check if you really need it. Also, as there are 2 types of Vit D, each with a different bodily activity, a blood test provides a clearer picture of one's needs. It proved to me that, in spite of well-meaning health advice sources recommending Vit D as a supplement, my body is getting enough from food and sun exposure.
