My old Watchman Niveau level monitor finally gave up the ghost, so I decided to buy the later monitor, the Sonic, also from Watchman. I removed the old Niveau tank unit and was pleasantly surprised to find that both the large sensor hole and the two securing screw holes were exactly the same for the new Sonic unit. So it took me less than ten minutes to replace the old for new units. I have a dipstick for the tank, which is accurate, I marked the stick where the oil is when the tank is full, measured the length from tip to the full line, divided that length by 10, and then marked the stick into 10 equally spaced sections, i.e. 10% per section. I dipped the tank when I fitted the Sonic unit and there was slightly over three sections or 30% + a little bit. When I set the receiver to the tank height indicated by the length of the dipstick, the display showed only two bars or 20%. I then set the dip switches to the next tank height up and the display showed three bars or 30%. So it is possible to fine tune the instrument to take account of individual anomalies. I will be dipping the tank each time the reading changes for the remainder of this tankful and for the next refill, just to give me confidence in the instrument. The only downside I can see is that the Niveau had a bund warning sensor, so that if the tank leaked into the bund, or water was somehow getting in it would give a warning. Watchman has unfortunately decided to omit this facility from the Niveau’s successor. All in all a good replacement for a Niveau, or any tank that needs a remote reading level monitor. Bought this as a replacement for one that refused to work after replacing the internal battery at 3 to 4 years of trouble free use. The replacement was listed as new, but obviously wasn't as the mounting base to fit it to the oil tank was missing, but as I already had this from the original failed unit it wasn't a problem. It will be interesting to see if the same failure occurs when it is time to replace the battery on this unit as my research has uncovered several similar issues reported by other customers of this product.

Had a watchman for 22years and no issue - in the end the battery compartment failed. So I go straight back to this brand its simple easy set up and robust.

Easy to set up and worked on my first tank very well, but the second tank i have had a problem. It was that the original hole in the second plastic tank was pre-drilled too near to a small vertical part of the tank. The transponder screw in piece, fitted to the tank perfectly but, there is a small protrusion on the side of the screw in transponder that would not allow it to screw into place without impeding on the small vertical protrusion of the tank. This presented me with an installation problem that i had to work out and eventually get it to fit. Why the small tube like protrusion needs to be there in the first place i do not know, it resembles a small vent, but doesn't seem to be much more than that.

This little gadget is the business, it's easy to configure with the instructions which are simple to understand A must have for oil tanks.. and I guess this would also work with a large water container?? This definitely beats measuring the oil with a dip stick!!
