I often have to solder lot of difficult little bits on pieces of jewellery and usually I manage but having made some pieces of jewellery in bronze metal clay I have found if I heat the bronze up too much when soldering it changes colour and as I pattern a lot of the pieces I can't then polish down to the original lovely golden colour without losing the patterns, so I thought I would try Thermo-Gel which I know has been around for a long time and it has worked a treat, I can protect the bronze while soldering the jump rings etc. and although I do sometimes still get a slight change of colour after soldering once I have cleaned up the piece it goes back to being the original golden colour it was once after coming out of the kiln. I can't see any reason why this wouldn't also work to protect stones you don't want to heat up if you have to solder close to them, which I think was one of the original uses of Thermo-Gel, it works well and isn't too fiddly and a small pot will last a long time I think. I have tried other heat barrier jells and they didn't work for me they usually just popped off when the heat was applied. Thermal jell worked and you can re-use the gel that isn't burned by the torch. I also used it to protect solder joints instead of yellow ochre.
