A wood way to split tougher logs.
This product does a good job splitting logs. Most of my logs I could split with an axe, but this really helps with the knotty areas. On an unknotty bit this gets through a log in a couple of hits, on a tougher one it can take up to 10 blows. A smaller hammer to start it off and then a sledgehammer (or at least a very large hammer) is needed to really blow the thing into large logs. Safety wise its probably a lot safer than an axe, and I didn't find that it flew out with much force and the wood doesn't fly like it does with an axe. However for easy to cut pieces an axe is much faster, so I would only use the wedge for toughies. The head and top of the wedge does lose its paint when you hit it for a few hours with a sledgehammer, but guess that it is to be expected. I had my doubts but, guess what? It works. You will need to be able to wield a heavy hammer, but it does what they say it does. After some heavy hammer-blows I realised the quality of the steel was very good - no evidence of heavy hammer-blows and the point stayed sharp. Heavy, solid and effective. But make sure you have a good cold chisel alongside because once the splitter is deep in the log, you'll never get it out.

Better with a splitting axe
I bought this and have used it. I find that a splitting axe is much more effective. It is useful when the axe gets stuck and it can be driven into the created split to force the wood apart. It should be sharper and more tapered to get into and through the logs.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
