Better than Basil!
Until this series, I was convinced that only Basil Rathbone could play the renowned sleuth. Not to mention, how could it be transplanted to the 21st century without ruining it? But this new take, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as his Watson, if anything, improves on the original. It does this by going deeper into the characters than was the case in the old movies, including a wonderful Mrs. Hudson (the detectives' landlord/housekeeper), played by Una Stubs. Add to this an updated Moriarity and a Mrs. Watson that is totally unexpected, and this series is by far superior, for instance, to the attempted updating given in a pair of movies by Guy Ritchie. (In those films, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, as Holmes and Watson respectively, take what was always first and foremost about a great mind and turn it into something all about the action -- which rather missed the point.) In conclusion - Don't miss this GREAT seriers.
