Melody Nelson's story holds a very special place in Serge Gainsbourg's discography. In the aftermath of the global success of 'Je t'aime moi non plus', Serge Gainsbourg, inspired by his new partner, Jane Birkin, decided 'to get down to business'. With the collaboration of a very young musician, Jean-Claude Vannier, he created an album hailed as one of the most remarkable successes of orchestral pop around the world.

Reviews5 stars out of 5 -- "Hired to backdrop Gainsbourg's spoken delivery, a whole host of British session musicians provided the rock element, while expert string arranger and medium-term collaborator Jean-Claude Vannier provided one of the most inventive, affecting orchestrations of a psych-into-prog era overdosing on them.", "HISTOIRE DE MELODY NELSON is where Gainsbourg's provocateur streak takes on something resembling grand scale. Lush and languorous...", "Its audacious blend of libidinous slow grooves, distorted rock guitar, and massive orchestration turned it into crate-diggers' gold.", 5 stars out of 5 -- "MELODY NELSON is generally regarded as Gainsbourg's career high....Like LOLITA, HISTOIRE DE MELODY NELSON is a kind of oratorio of desire...", "A bizarre, beguiling concept album....With progressive composer/arranger Jean-Claude Vannier's cinematically swooning strings, loping bass, and twangy guitars.", "HISTOIRE DE MELODY NELSON's skeletal, jazz-like structure - with bass frequently playing the role of lead instrument - influenced a generation of indie-rock tastemakers.", 5 stars out of 5 -- "28 minutes of art-house rock that still stands unrivaled in the history of all recorded music.", "The arrangements seem to respond almost intuitively to the twists in Gainsbourg's language and narrative, to the point where they're carrying as much storytelling weight as the words.", "Now a firm cult favourite, this bonkers slice of Gallic dirty-talk offers a very different kind of French lesson."
I've come to this album almost 50 years after it was originally released in March 1971. It's an astounding album on so many levels. The fact I can't speak a word of French in no way detracts from the melodic beauty of the album, and Gainsbourg's sexy sounding drawl just adds a very important element to the overall feel.
It's been cited as one of the 100 most influential albums of all time, even though it was a decade after it's original release before it started receiving the credibility and status it now has.
It's a short album at just under 35 minutes, though utterly haunting from beginning to end. Some of the most incredible string arrangements I've heard on record (and highly original).
This version also contains an additional cd of outtakes from the album as well as a brilliant dvd about the making of the record. This includes great interviews with many of the original collaborators on the album, as well as some great footage, featuring performances of many of the songs. It also has a lavish booklet in both French and English... Highly recommended *****
This record is beautiful way to get back and reach the feeling of the early 70-ties. It's a perfect mix of Rock n roll, blues and whatever and you discover that together with Serge Gainbourg. This record is well recommended
