Essential Tool for Viewing Magnetic Fields (spoiler alert!)
This Field Viewer is a great way of seeing what magnets are doing without reverting to messy iron filings. It comes with a fridge magnet which (spoiler alert!) interestingly is zebra striped with alternate N and S poles running in parallel strips. I am able to view the fields from a set of neodymium magnets and verify that I have placed them as needed. The film goes dark where the field is vertical through it and light where the field is horizontal. Doesn't indicate N or S. Motion is visible when magnets are moved slowly by hand. There is some residual darkening which can be removed by 'wiping' with a magnet.
