I bought this as a replacement for a missing bracket on an old set of Topeak mudguards. The old set had a quite different expansion bolt, which was actually the only bit I needed. The new expansion bolt initially did not appear to fit at all. However, after considerable messing about I discovered a YouTube posting (in French) which indicated there are two sizes of expansion bolt. The smaller size is sleeved into the larger size when supplied and is completely invisible until the expansion bolt assembly is wholly dissassembled. It is then all very obvious but managed to cause considerable consternation and wasted time, hence the 4 stars. Once fitted it all works fine and I no longer have to wash crap of my face before they will let me in the bar.

It's a necessary evil - if you have these Topeak Defender M1 mudguards on the front wheel, then from time to time they are going to break. The rigourous nature of off-road cycling means that mudguards get bashed and bent and they vibrate. Sadly the weakest part of this mudguard set is the Fork Attachment Replacement kit. The mudguards are good and flexible, but they exert force on this mounting bracket. The plastic part of the bracket snaps, whilst the metal part stays intact. This is the third time in 3 years for me. With the whole front and back kit only costing typically between £10 and £20, it's really annoying to have an annual 'running cost' of £8.95 for my front mudguard. Can't blame the retailers for this - it's a design failing.

Effective in stopping mud/water being thrown up onto you. However the fitting where it connects to the bike has a tendency to come out despite having tightened it up correctly. Have lost one set due to this already. However would still recommend however you should check occasionally to ensure it is not coming out the tube.

I would give this 5 stars if it didn't break every 6 months. Serious design flaw in either or both material specification or dimensions. It's a mountain bike mudguard, it's going to get bounced around and flex. A lot. It shouldn't break so easily.

This is the second set I am on. The first one snapped off just above the metal u-shaped support bracket. The plastic is too brittle, I think it should be made of polypropylene to give it more flexibility.
