This was manufactured by Airfix 40 years ago I believe. In spite of this, it stands up to scrutiny against modern Hornby products. Unless I am wrong, it may be the same tooling that Hornby uses today for GWR Autocoaches in the current range. Not wanting to pay £30 I scoured the internet for second hand models and found this advertised as "New". Bearing in mind the fact that Airfix went bust in the early 80's , I wondered where it's been all that time !. I need not have been concerned as it's an excellent model from the days when Airfix and Mainline forced Hornby to "up it's game".

These are ‘just the ticket’ (pun intended) for a GWR branch line, preferably single track. With a pannier tank locomotive it forms a complete passenger train. The Airfix version is generally regarded as the most realistic offering from the big manufacturers. The kit-built K’s model is heavy but the brass ones are better. However, these rarely come onto the used market. Another plus for the Airfix one is that it’s the easiest to open up to insert seated passengers. I had an Airfix one but gave it away after buying a brass one from Hattons for £99 plus P&P some years ago. But regrettably it’s sealed by solder so it enters my station, Staverton GWR empty and departs the same.

Nicely detailed model with some separately fitted details such as roof ventilators, bell and handrails at passenger entrance doors. Great addition to any GWR based layout (but needs to be paired with a correct loco for authenticity see Wikipedia article for more info). Bit fiddly but with care, roof can be removed to fit passengers etc to the moulded interior if desired.
