Reviews"I wouldn't be surprised if ten years from now we realized that this book's publication was a turning point in the decline of Christianity in the West."  -Tom Gilson, author, Thinking Christian, "Boghossian has provided an indispensable chart book for all of us who must navigate the rising sea of magical thinking that is inundating America today."  -Victor Stenger, PhD, author, God: The Failed Hypothesis and God and the Atom, "I wouldn't be surprised if ten years from now we realized that this book's publication was a turning point in the decline of Christianity in the West." --Tom Gilson, author, Thinking Christian, "A book so great you can skip it and just read the footnotes. Pure genius."  -Christopher Johnson, cofounder, the Onion, "There is nothing else on the market like this book that helps atheists talk believers out of their faith. Every atheist interested in doing so, or who talks to believers about faith at all, should read it. It's both needed and brilliant!" -- John W. Loftus, author of Why I Became an Atheist and The Outsider Test for Faith "Boghossian has provided an indispensible chart book for all of us who must navigate the rising sea of magical thinking that is inundating America today." -- Victor Stenger, Ph.D., author of God: The Failed Hypothesis and God and the Atom "If we want to live in world that is safer and more rational for all, then this is the guidebook we have been waiting for. Relying on extensive experience and a deep concern for humanity, Peter Boghossian has produced a game changer. This is not a book to read while relaxing in a hammock on a sunny afternoon. This is the how-to manual to take into the trenches of everyday life where minds are won and lost in the struggle between reason and madness." -- Guy P. Harrison, author of 50 Simple Questions for Every Christian and Race and Reality, "Boghossian has provided an indispensable chart book for all of us who must navigate the rising sea of magical thinking that is inundating America today." --Victor Stenger, PhD, author, God: The Failed Hypothesis and God and the Atom, "There is nothing else on the market like this book that helps atheists talk believers out of their faith. Boghossian's call for honest, evidence-based thinking has implications far beyond its focus on debates about God and religious faith. A Manual for Creating Atheists is a strong challenge to ideology and propaganda, wherever we find them." --Russell Blackford, author of Freedom of Religion and the Secular State, "There is nothing else on the market like this book that helps atheists talk believers out of their faith. SynopsisFor thousands of years, the faithful have honed proselytizing strategies and talked people into believing the truth of one holy book or another. Indeed, the faithful often view converting others as an obligation of their faith--and are trained from an early age to spread their unique brand of religion. The result is a world broken in large part by unquestioned faith. As an urgently needed counter to this tried-and-true tradition of religious evangelism, A Manual for Creating Atheists offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith--but for talking them out of it. Peter Boghossian draws on the tools he has developed and used for more than 20 years as a philosopher and educator to teach how to engage the faithful in conversations that will help them value reason and rationality, cast doubt on their religious beliefs, mistrust their faith, abandon superstition and irrationality, and ultimately embrace reason.

  • Essential for those who care about how other humans are treated

I originally didn't want this book because even though im an atheist i still, even after reading the book don't want to create more atheists. however when i saw the author in a bunch of youtube vids talking about how the book was designed to help people convince others to reconsider deeply held beliefs, I was intrigued. After i heard this I was all in. Its a short read and Dr. Boghossian hass 30 years experience with teaching folks many things but specializing in critical thinking if i remember correctly. Really, the only people who are going to find anything bad about this book will likely be people who haven't read it or who read it and will actually ignore what the book is about in general sweeping form. This book covers epistemology, philosophy, the dangers of believing things that have no evidential merit, the effects granting ideas dignity have on democracy and really about the courage to challenge ideas all while respecting other humans. Another thing the author pays close attention to is the multi contextual nature of the words we use to communicate. Whether its separating faith from hope for clarity or talking about contemporary liberalism vs classic liberalism and how it applies to how serious topics are discussed in classrooms and out of them. Its a short read too. I am big on reason and logic and like many i naturally believed that evidence was enough to convince others to reconsider things and change their minds. I was very wrong. Evidence is great but this book is practically about the Socratic Method. I have employed the techniques from the method in conversations about religion, gods, racism, politics and really any topic which humans are making claims and my success rate increased instantly. its a life changing book for those interested in helping others be better to their fellow human.
