Got these to replace the stock tubes in my brand new Tubemeister 36 head along with a matched set of TAD power tubes. All I can say is WOW!! Gone was all the harsh brittle high end, smoothed out the clean channel, sweetened up the mid's and high end. Has much better bass now. Is it at Mesa levels, no. But it now has nice full bodied low end. Also got rid of all the nasty distortion and brought the gain to a whole new level. If you're reading this you know the difference between harmonic distortion (bad) and pure tube gain (good). The lead channel will rip your head off now if that's what you're after. These are some of the nicest new (reissue) tubes made.
The reissue Tung-Sol 12ax7 tube is one of the consistently well reviewed audio tubes out there. Russian manufactured in the same facility as the Mullard and Northern Electric models, this particular tube is known for smooth response, broad tonal range and low noise. For my particular application, the preamp of my bass guitar head; I studied all of the present new offerings out there. Looking for something with a very low microphonic character was important given the vibration present in any bass rig. In addition, the ability to keep the low frequencies tight and defined is essential. Finally, using a tube that would provide some drive without too much grit was a consideration. This tube actually performed better than expected. Sure it was quiet, without microphonics and hum, even at full gain. It also had enough drive to add the desired edge to my sound, when needed without harshness. However, the real surprise was the "body" or depth of sound it offered, especially at generous gain settings. Other tubes, seemed to just add grind to the sound. Now for the potential down side of this tube. It is not likely for those applications where real high gain is desired, say uber hard rock and metal guitarists. Although, it might be worth a try if you are getting too much in the way of noise. So satisfied with this tube, I have recommended it to the bands guitarist for part of his rig and have just purchased another on of these for my microphone preamp.Read full review

Most all type vacume tubes are a very personal thing. Its like the tone you prefer. Changing one tube in your signal chain can make a huge difference in "your" tone. My tone is old school ...less pre gain...more power saturated. This newer version Tung-Sol 12ax7 works well in my application. Class A 5 watt design.

The Tung-Sol 12ax7 is, to my ears, the best tube of it's type that I use in a range of small to large guitar amps. The balanced version is perfect in the phase inverter position and allows the power stage in a push-pull circuit to function with a greater symmetry and therefore able to produce a better quality of sound. I have proven this to myself many times over and would recommend these tubes as the best option at the best price. These tubes sound fat and rich and have clean headroom to spare.
Love these tubes. They are amazingly thick and crunchy. They ar perfect for Classic Rock and Metal. I do prefer the Groove Tubes though. They are a bit warmer and creamier. I'm a Blues guy. Tung-Sol tubes break nice and early with mature saturation and incredible sustain though. For what I paid for these, I couldn't have gotten some crappy Sov-Tecs. My buddy likes to shred. He prefers these over anything. I'm still sold on Groove tubes though.

I was in the process of selling my Mesa Boogiev due to the lack of headroom and the excess of snarl and squal. I put this tube in V1position and it was different amp. What to say, I have ordered 3 more TungSols and I am not selling my amp any more. No hum, buzz, tons of good, juicy tone. A dram to play, perfect compression. It saved my soves and my amp from selling

Nice tube, good gain, some character, I put it in the later stages of the amp, giving a wide me a High Wide Sound Stage,...Bigger Sounding than some of my other Tungsol 12AX7's... I have read this tube was selected more for gain than for -- balance. A bit diffuse, however if you 'feel', like filling the cathedral, give 1or 2 a whirl. -Jgr.

Excellent tone and gain! Low noise too. My Fender twin has more 'punch' when using the Tung sol ax7 tubes in the VS2 and VS4 sockets (vibe channel side of amp). Even using a Tung Sol in the VS2 socket alone makes a difference. Excellent tube for the money!!

These are the best sounding new production 12ax7 tubes I've tried to date and reasonably priced. Much improved clarity and tone over JJ's. Great for clean or high gain. They deliver that pleasing crispy crunch, not a mushy harsh fuzzy mess like some newer tubes(jj).

I am using these as first tube in preamp and the whole preamp sounds very good. These are outperforming most of the cheap tubes I have tried so far and are in level with 6N-2P. 4 out of 5 stars only because I am not sure those are best in the class, but for sure those are very good!
