This is an overlooked joy to the eyes and ears. It involves the life of ageing musical entertainers in a large country house run as a care home, but on a grand scale befitting classical musicians and opera singers. Three of these retired singers, Tom Courtney, Pauline Collins, and Billy Connelly were famous for singing one of the most renowned quartets from Rigolletto. Trouble comes in the form of the last of the quartet, diva Maggie Smith, who arrives hating the idea of communal living and makes her feelings known as only she can. It gets worse when it turns out that she was briefly married to Tom Coutney years ago and it all ended badly. As you can imagine with Connelly in the cast there is great comedy as well as histrionics as the rest of the residents try to persuade the four of them to sing the famous quartet once more in the home's annual entertainment show. Maggie Smith says 'Over my dead body,' so there are plenty of fireworks as well as laughter, all accompanied by delightful music of every kind. Surprisingly this very British film was directed by Dustin Hoffman.Read full review

Stylish and star-studded, this is pleasant entertainment for the older viewers. It is a treat visually and the performances are splendid. Tom Courtenay is particularly fine and it's good to see Maggie Smith back to serious acting, away from the tiresome Downton Abbey, as the would-be outsider at the home for retired musicians. Dustin Hoffman directs at a suitably relaxing pace and it all unravels like a cosy midsummer night's dream. If you're more Tarantino-minded, look away now!

Not everyone will be given the opportunity to become a "Senior Citizen".... as has been so sadly demonstrated by the current CoVID 19 situation ..... so to watch a film portraying some of the "difficulties" encountered when reaching a certain age whilst still conveying a high degree of enthusiasm and humour was absolutely delightful ..... and encouraging! Great film and excellent casting! Judith

A little gem of a movie. A very basic story with a predictable ending but it is the acting and direction that make it shine and so enjoyable to watch.

I watched this DVD after going to a local live amateur dramatic performance. I enjoyed both the theatre version and the DVD version. So many laughs.
