The first in the sequence of 'Road' films, this musical comedy adventure sees Scat Sweeney (Bing Crosby) and Hot Lips Burton (Bob Hope) on the run from the law once again, this time as stowaways on an ocean liner bound for Rio de Janeiro. When they come to the rescue of beautiful heiress Lucia Maria de Andrade (Dorothy Lamour), they are surprised at her ungrateful reaction - until they realise she has been hypnotised by her scheming Aunt Catherine (Gale Sondergaard).

  • One of the original road movies

All the Bing Crosby & Bob Hope 'Road' movies are very enjoyable. They were ahead of their time when first released, so some of their tropes and twists seem commonplace now, but they still stand up well. They appear to have been done entirely in the studio - I don't remember any location shots - and some of the scenery and costumes are laughable today, but the sense of fun shines through, and the cast all appear to be enjoying themselves.
