  • Great courtroom drama!

Very good film! The actors are all wonderful, from Charles Laughton's grumpy, hugely-experienced barrister, resentful of his nurse's attentiveness (engaging played by Elsa Lanchester) to Marlene Dietrich's deceptive witness and Tyrone Power's credible defendant. The story contains surprises and has a shock twist at the end. It is principally a courtroom drama and is hugely entertaining, and well worth watching!

  • Witness For the Prosecution

I bought this for a friend, so I've never actually seen the film. So I'll have to base my review entirely on the DVD case: Obviously this is a film about some sort of legal matter involving a prosecution. I'd imagine that one of the key players in this is a witness, who must be the eponymous hero of the story. I see it has Marlene Dietrich in it, and she is reclined on something resembling a camp bed. All in all, it doesn't look very comfortable - especially given that Tyrone appears to be holding her down, and picking her pocket. ON a side note, the front cover has her right leg hanging off the mattress, whilst the back cover has her left leg in the same position. Maybe some trick of the light is allowing us to see right through the case? Who knows?!! I get the impression that they haven't paid their electricity bill, as they seem to be in a room with no lights. Perhaps that is reason for the prosecution; unpaid monies owing to their electricity service provider. More evidence for this seems to be that they can't even afford a rug, let alone a nice deep-pile carpet for the whole room, and they havn't even got a cheap Tesco Value duvet to keep them warm. Maybe it's his flat, and he's picking her pocket to see if he can find a coin for the meter? Although she doesn't look it, she must be knocking on a bit in the film, as the case implies that she's wearing suspenders for the first time in 50 years, although she seems to have removed these before letting Tyrone loose with his fingersmithing. So, there you have it; a very famous film, with some very famous people, that you can pick up for less than a tenner, and still have some dosh left over for a couple of beers.

  • Classic Movie

Regardless of how old this movie is, it does not disappoint, providing you’re a fan of old black and white movies. Excellent performances by Charles Laughton, Tyrone Power and Elsa Lanchester, Marlene Dietrich was a little over the top, but not enough to spoil the movie for me. They don’t make them like this anymore unfortunately.

  • Corkscrew finale

A brilliant courtroom drama superbly played by a first rate cast (Dietrich/Laughton/Power etc.) Masterfully directed and co-scripted by Billy Wilder based on an Agatha Christie stage play. The entire film is superb viewing but the final twenty minutes or so are a roller-coaster ride of twists and turns (you might spot one of them coming but you won't guess them all!)
