Baseball-themed drama starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams. Gus Lobel (Eastwood) is a veteran baseball scout who is nearing the end of his career. Realising that her father is struggling to keep up with the demands of his job as his eyesight deteriorates, Gus's daughter Mickey (Adams) reluctantly agrees to accompany her father on his upcoming scouting venture. Justin Timberlake co-stars as Mickey's love interest Johnny Flanagan, an aspiring sports announcer whose career was first launched when he was scouted by Gus years ago.

For decades, Gus Lobel (Eastwood) has been one of the best scouts in Major League Baseball. But these days his eyes just aren't what they used to be, and as a phenomenal young batter enters the draft, the owners of the Atlanta Braves cast a shadow of doubt over Gus' judgment. Meanwhile, his daughter Mickey ( Adams) is an aspiring partner at a major Atlanta law firm. In the wake of his wife's death, Gus sent Mickey away, and their relationship has been strained ever since. But she knows a thing or two about baseball, and recognising that her father's job is in jeopardy, she decides to help him -- even at the risk of derailing her own career. Now, throwing caution to the wind (and ignoring her gruff father's objections), Mickey joins Gus for a scouting trip that could keep him in the game until he's ready to retire, as well as repair a father/daughter relationship that once seemed all but lost. Quality performances by the leading actors. Moves along well.
Definitely one of Clint Eastwood's better films of recent years. The willingness of the former tough guy to play a character battling the problems of old age and deteriorating eyesight rings true as does his initially fiery relationship with the excellent Amy Adams. Justin Timberlake lends good support. An intimate knowledge of baseball is not required as the film is a lot more about character and relationships than sport which merely provides the setting.
