Additional InformationDavid O. Russell's SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK stars Bradley Cooper as Pat, a bipolar man from Philadelphia who has spent the last eight months in a mental hospital. He was ordered there after a violent incident involving his wife and another man. Pat moves in with his father (Robert De Niro), a lifelong Eagles fans who has low-level OCD issues. Pat wants to get back together with his wife, even though there is a restraining order keeping him from contacting her. He soon befriends a depressed young woman who's mourning the death of her husband by engaging in compulsive sex with almost everyone she meets; she also knows his wife and offers to deliver a letter of his to her if he acts as her partner in a local dance competition.
ReviewsSt. Louis Post-Dispatch - When films are good, actors and directors get a lot of the credit that should go to the screenwriters. In the case of SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, which is one of the best films of the year, there is a popcorn bowl of glory to go around., Los Angeles Times - SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is rich in life's complications. It will make you laugh, but don't expect it to fit in any snug genre pigeonhole. Dramatic, emotional, even heartbreaking, as well as wickedly funny, it has the gift of going its own way, a complete success from a singular talent., Entertainment Weekly - Family nuttiness, football madness, romantic obsession, and certifiable mental illness coexist happily in SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK - a crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn., The New York Times - For all its high-flying zaniness the movie has the sting of life, and its humor feels dredged up from the same dark, boggy place from which Samuel Beckett extracted his yuks.

  • A great film.

Hard to make a funny, beautiful and touching film about mental illness without being patronising or distasteful but this gets it spot on. Beautiful poignant moments, laugh out loud moments and great portrayals of people with various forms of mental illness.

  • Disappointing and Dull

Very slow start but interestingly put together but wasn't in depth enough to definitely confirm he had BPD but simply anger issues.

  • engaging

"Silver Linings" is a great pairing of Lawrence (protagonist) and Cooper (subject) as the two struggle to restore balance after a period of setbacks. Lawrence is the tough singleton recovering from her husband's death. Cooper is a bipolar sufferer trying to recover his wife. Plenty of screen magic as pair slowly engage via workouts then through the dance medium. An excellent supporting performance by De Niro (Cooper's Dad) a gambling addict totally supportive of his son.
