Additional InformationIan Richardson plays scheming politician, the deliciously villainous Francis Urquhart, in THE HOUSE OF CARDS, who plots his ruthless rise to power through the ranks of his political party in this television mini-series. Based on the best-selling trilogy by Michael Dobbs and set in the Houses of Parliament, this political satire follows the career of MP and anti-hero Urquhart whose election campaign has been plagued by a number of mysterious deaths. The politician's scheming knows no bounds, and he manages to ensnare a member of the royal family in his quest for power. In the second part, TO PLAY THE KING Urquart involves the heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales, whose personal life has already been upset by scandal. The scheming Urquhart's aide shares his deadly secret, but his mistress, who's also a journalist, tries to expose him. He leaves a trail of victims, friend and foe, but nothing stops his rise to power. The last part, THE FINAL CUT sees Urquhart wanting 'to leave his mark on the world' before his tenure as head of Great Britain is over. However, when deadly skeletons in his cupboard, which could eventually bring about his ruin and downfall, keep raising their ugly heads, steps are taken by those closest to him to insure that does not happen.

    Classic TV at it’s best!

Superb story writing, great lineup of first class actors and plots to keep you coming back. Led by the late, great Ian Richardson, does Machiavellian arch baddies get any better than this?! Politics has never appealed so much as in this satirical feast of wrong doings. Five star all the way!!

    Dated style

I remember being impressed with this in the 80s, so after watching the US version, I wanted to remind myself of the original. Sadly I don't think the production has stood the test of time and I was disappointed. For all Spacey's transgressions, he is a damned fine actor.

  • House of cards Trilogy

Absolutely amazing series this one. I watched house of cards the American version with Kevin Spacey a few years ago and really enjoyed that one. A few months ago I stumbled on the original British version on amazon prime where the first three episodes were free. After watching these I just had to watch the rest of the trilogy & managed to find the DVD of the whole Trilogy on Ebay. Ian Richardson plays an absolutely brilliant part as Francis Urquhart whose character becomes the British prime minister. Judge for yourself if this is true British politics. I could not possibly comment! 😉

  • Engaging & well acted

This is a bit dated but that doesn't matter because the story is engaging and extremely well acted. It's a pity we don't have more programmes like this today. Well worth watching.

  • Needs bigger and clearer info on disc.

The only info on the individual discs is in such tiny writing round the middle that we watch the wrong side first! Very unsatisfactory. Even 1A, 1B in bold would help.

  • The original UK version is excellent

Excellent stuff. I haven't dabbled with the version from USA but I remember this when it was first shown and enjoy again. Ian Richardson and the way he plays to camera is particularly good. I hugely enjoyed the cast talking segment of these DVDs.

  • Entertaining and edge of the seat stuff

A wonderful trilogy with a gripping story line and with superb acting. Ian Richardson at his best as a scheming ruthless MP. Excellent supporting actors. Although filmed in the late 90s (I think) it could well reflect what could happen today! A must view DVD

  • Well worth viewing

A brilliant series that I remembered from the 1990's. Apart from things like no or few mobile phones, it hasn't dated - perhaps reflecting the nature of politicians, whatever the era.
