Compelling: should carry a warning about the temptation to binge-watch!
I was sceptical about yet another take on Sherlock Holmes but soon captivated by Elementary, with its great writing, characters and cast . The writing is excellent and Jonny Lee Miller is witty, engaging and convincing as a modern Holmes in New York. I was doubtful about the idea of Lucy Liu as Holmes' companion, Joan Watson, but she brings it off ably and the pair work really well together. Well supported by Aidan Quinn and Jon Michael as the two New York detectives for whom Holmes and Watson offer their consulting detective services. Not the Holmes I know.....but...
Not really Sherlock, but good none the less. The best episodes are when they don't try to 'bolt on' references to the Conon Doyle stories. They get the character of Mycroft Holmes totally wrong, luckily the Mycroft role is better portraited as Sherlock's father (!).
