This should be the only G-Shock Square you should ever need to own. Obviously watch collectors would disagree as there are other stylish G-Shock Squares like the GW-S5600 even down to the average joe GW-M5610. However, this is the king and it is designed to be worn, all the time! Casio have given it a more comfortable, softer strap (it is not genuine rubber as some would have you believe but merely a softer synthetic than the normal ones) which may or may not affect its durability; I guess we'll have to see. It's also important to note that the module itself is housed in a steel case with a DLC steel screw- down case-back basically making it bomb proof. The case is then embedded in the normal resin/plastic watch body. The normal ones use a plastic casing into which a a screw plate is attached using four screws. This is also then embedded into the normal watch body as above. This makes the watch heavier and slightly thicker than the others however it's more of a nod to how G-Shocks used to be made. Personally I would have no problem with a entirely plastic case (even the case back) if it meant making it lighter and thinner. However, this still feels great on the wrist and worth its weight for sure! I also want to point out that the buttons are NOT nearly as stiff and difficult to push as other reviews have made out. This may be a revision Casio have made to the button springs in the later models of these GW-5000s or maybe I was just expecting them to be a lot stiffer than they were. Lastly, the neutral colour (or lack thereof) of this model is absolutely stunning. I can't quite explain it but the understated, symmetrical look is just pure class. There is nothing trying to jump out at you (some can't stand that red line of the GW-M5610 for example even if it is a nod to the original) but rather it wants to be stealthy, even if it is a tad thicker and heavier. In fact, the only colour you may see is a shimmer of purple when the solar cells catch the light at an angle. I think it's beautiful. Whether or not you're willing to pay a premium for all this is up to you but hey, that's the price it goes for and that's that. There are much cheaper Casio models out there and I even made the mistake of buying one of those trying to convince myself I didn't want or rather, need, this one. Well, let's just say the other one is in a desk somewhere...poor thing.Read full review

As a new collector and long time lover of the classic Casio g-shock 5600 style I came across the 5000-1JF on a fan website and it said I had to have it. Apparently any true collector has to have this model. I don’t know about that but it’s awesome. It has a weightier chassis from the standard model which feels quality. The cover is screw down and a nice dark grey. The solar charging is here with six band time setting. Should never lose a second. It’s pricey than the similar 5610 you can buy in the U.K. Function wise very similar. I have that too. But the 1JF is worth the extra cash to import it from Japan. Looks amazing and although only a fan would notice I love the feeling of wearing it.

I love this watch. I was nervous about the price but was immediately reassured when I held it in my hand. It is great quality and feels like it will last for years. I also think it looks great. I prefer the more monochrome look which does slightly take away from the retro feel but makes it more versatile as an every day watch. The service was also good. It arrived earlier then I was expecting and was packaged well.

In the G-Shock universe the GW5000 is the equivalent of a Speedmaster or Submariner. Great history, compact, sleek and powerful. Highly recommended!

Had wanted one of these for ages and was not disappointed with the build quality or comfort this provides. One of the best that just gets the job done
