ReviewsThis high interest, low vocabulary series combines a short historical fiction tale with graphic novel style illustrations. This tale has a great deal of action and appealed to the low reading group of 7th grade boys I used for field testing. Jungle Scout tells the story of an American platoon on patrol in the jungles of Vietnam being guided by a sixteen year old Vietnamese boy, Lam Hung, who was once a member of the Viet Cong. The author alternates between telling his story as a narrator watching the action and letting the reader hear the conversations of the characters and telling the story from Lam Hung's point of view. Ultimately, the scout saves the platoon and the American soldiers now appreciate and accept him. This book is written for an education audience and contains a glossary, a brief historical summary concerning the war, discussion questions, and writing prompts. This book can be used for grades three through five and especially for boys in grades six and seven who are reading below grade level. Recommended. -Audrey Irene Daigneault, Library Media Specialist, West Side Middle School, Groton, Connecticut
