Highrove Creeps.
Dear Mr Bower. I really enjoyed Rebel Prince. I bought it for a number of reasons. Firstly I had my first French kiss at Highgrove at the top of the attic stairs, the occasion was a pony club dance long before the new people moved in. Highgrove has given me the creeps ever since. I am about the same age as P.C. and I played polo against him and hunted with him on a number of occasions. Secondly I wondered how many old chums were still about, but as you pointed out most of them wished to remain nameless. Ann Mallalieu and Andrew P-Bowles were the only ones to get a mention. A.P-B and I played for the army team in Rome presumably before he was married (1971?) The Italians won by cheating. But my main memory was one of A.P-B's throw away chat up lines was that 'Sex gives me a headache'. It worked for him, but when I tried it, things got out of hand with those already spoken for and I had to resign my commission a bit quick. What made me sit up in the book was when some senior courtier referred to 'Fawcett and Burrell' as the scum of the earth or words to that effect. I live these days in a communal block flats that are run by a Housing Association. 11 years or so ago an unsavoury creature arrived in a hurry from Tetbury. He has been a complete law to himself ever since. The landlord won't touch him or the police. There is an excuse for everything he does (which always reeks) and there is something about it all that suggests a refugee from Highgrove and that he is a former member of the backstairs mafia that has had the chop, but still has some sort of protection for whatever reason. Same old same old..yawn
I see this book has good reviews but alas i cannot give it one, i found it boring perhaps the author wanted to curry favour in high places, Its just the same old same old stuff we already knew about or guessed.
