About this product

Product Information

It's six short months after Pearl Harbour. Alongside the commandos, 29 year old Damien Parer lugs his heavy camera gear up and down the razorback ridges of New Guinea, filming the savage skirmishes. When Damien's film is released, the crowds line up at theatres around the block, and an Academy Award awaits. To his shock, one of the images he has filmed has been improperly released, causing a fight between himself and the Department of Information. Damien is assigned to covering 'fluff' stores, instead of the frontline - the story he must tell. in the teeming hell of jungle warfare, Damien films his masterpiece in all its shocking, intimate, frightening reality, all the while vowing to return to the woman he loves, Marie.

PARER'S WAR tells the story of a character who is large in World War II Australian history. Including actual footage from the front line in New Guinea, a heart rending record of jungle warfare. And yet his private life was complex and sweet. The back ground to the making of the film allows us to further understand the torn situation of this young man who did not return from the battles in New Guinea. His newsreels won the first Academy Award to an Australian film. The writer tells of discussions with Parer's widow who described the first night of marriage in details exactly replicated in the film. In an understated way the film reveals anxiety, exhilaration, love and joy. This is a must see account of part of Australia's history.
