Reviews4 stars out of 5 -- "A gruff, no-frills performer with a voice like a bag of rusty nails scattering noisily over his career highlights.", "Cash was all but inciting riots with his rockers and incendiary remarks, then calming the captives with hymns." -- Grade: A, "...This Beefed-Up Landmark Release Reissue Contains Nearly an Album's Worth of Extra Material...", "It is certainly the stuff of legend, and this expanded edition brings the drama and excitement of that evening back to life."
I have always been a huge fan of Johnny Cash ! Grew up with all of his music and the 2 live prison albums are some of his best ! Live at San Quentin was the 1969 followup to his Folsom Prison release a year earlier. This release was so popular that it went to number #1 on both country & pop charts earning Johnny a Grammy in 1969 !! His recording of Shel Silverstein's "A Boy Named Sue" is more Johnny Cash humor at it's best which also went to number #1 as a single !! The remastered edition sounds great. Very highly recommended and a must for all music fans !!!!
Johnny Cash's intimate knowledge of being incarcerated is obvious.
This famous recording is most certainly helped by the inmates of San Quentin. Johnny Cash's intimate knowledge of being a felon shines through with his affinity with the inmates.
