  • Spirit based. The only stuff to use, despite the cost.

I learnt, many years ago, from 'The Salvager' programme on TV actually, to only use spirit based wood stain like this, and always have. Water based stains seem to sit on the top and are just not as good. The only problem with Rustins is that it's so expensive, £20 for a litre is about twice what it should cost realistically. But even saying that, it does, surprisingly go a long way, especially if applied with a pad of cloth. It can be thinned with 25% white spirit and applied by using an old throwaway cleaner product spray bottle, to create a lighter and even stain, the spirit carrying it into the wood rather than sitting on it like a water based product. Do it outside though! I have recently used the 'Ebony' (pure black) on a self made book shelf unit made from lightly sanded off garden type timber. I haven't even bothered to lacquer or wax it it, the matt/satin finish is perfect and it doesn't come off on your hands. It's exactly the finish I wanted. Shake the tin really well, there's a compound in it that can settle out if left standing.
