Lifeboat Sextant
I've had the opportunity to compare sights of the Mark 3 with the sights of a Mark 25 and the older Mark 12. The Mark 3 compares very favorably. The Mark 3 is a vernier scale s extant. It's arc is divided into whole degrees. The vernier scale provides minutes. If you study the use of vernier scales, you can approximate seconds readings. A second of arc measures 1/10th nautical mile so your error won't be catastrophic.
I'm a writer, historical/nautical fiction. When I give presentations, I talk about seamanship and navigation in the late 19th Century. Having the three Davis sextants allows me to show the differences between a modern micrometer drum sextants and the vernier sextants of the era I write about. My audience can actually pick up these sextants. I will not use my Astra IIIB for presentations! I think the Mark 3 is an excellent emergency sextant considering how extensively navigation is accomplished via GPS. I do recommend people read "How To Use Plastic Sextants" by David Burch, however, to fully appreciate the capabilities and limitations of plastic sextants. The Mark 3 is designed to help you make landfall in an emergency.
