Back to the FARM!
This book showed me I was getting too much sodium, table salt, because our food is "LOADED" with it.
When I grew up on the farm, all our meat, vegetables, and fruit was from our garden, fruit orchard, and meat we butchered. NOW, when I buy a tube of pizza dough, a can of sauce, some cheese and pepperoni, and bake my pizza, I'm exceeding the recommended about of sodium just by eating the crust! Forget about the sauce and toppings.
All at once my blood pressure shot up from 120/80 to 170/105! Dr. of course prescribed BP medicine.
Well I've stayed in good health at condition all my life by eating healthy, so I read this book and sure enough, smoked ham, sausage patties, frozen pizza and even vegetable juice were high is sodium.
So now I'm eating baked potatoes, bananas, and make my chili from dried kidney beans. I was surprised canned kidneys had lots of potassium, but canned ones don't even list it?
We are also the only country that allows "High Fructose Corn Syrup" in our foods, but that's another story.
I is no wonder that I can look down and see my belt at 240 pounds. But I try to limit my carbohydrates to 60 grams a day. While others buy 2 or 3 24 can packs of Coke or Persi type canned drinks. Each can has 14 grams of carbs! Even bread at 12 grams, two sandwiches in your lunch and you have almost maxed out as that's 48 grams. Add a Coke and you are done for the day.
When will we start teaching what we need to eat, and forget all the "Dont's"? I try to eat what I really need, not just what tastes the best, with no concern for what I "NEED" to eat.
I'll get down off of my soapbox now. Hope some will try to learn what to eat?
