About this product

Product Information

The absorbing and everlasting subject of watch repairing has been dealt with in books in many languages throughout the years. But when de Carle first set out to write Practical Watch Repairing in 1946, it was with the intention of creating a textbook that a watchmaker can understand, even if he can't read. With over 550 instructional black-and-white illustrations and an approach that assumes no prior watch-repairing experience, this book achieves and surpasses that lofty mission, and has been touted as the best illustrated book on practical horology (Horological Journal) ever written. For the readers in his audience, de Carle has provided well-informed discourse on every topic a watchmaker, or aspiring watchmaker, needs to know. With Practical Watch Repairing, even a layman can become a watch-repair specialist.

  • One of the books to have on Watch Repair - A beginners opinion ....

The fact that it was first printed along time ago adds to the quality of the information as watch repair is a practical subject and the book is written in a very practical style with lots of illustrations. The tools and cleaning stuff suggested are often hand made with ideas on how to do it. I am sure modern equivalents are available but I like the do it yourself approach. I also like the book because it does not spend time on the history of watches and clocks but goes directly to what is required to start repairing them. This is what I wanted, I have enough books on the history. I wanted a book that would explain what was required to repair a watch and to give a good intro into how the watch worked. Although first printed in 1946 (I understand) its pretty readable and has a nice flow and talks about dirty finger nails that have enough dirt to stop 12 watches. Made me now consider the environment in which I open up the case of a watch. All in all I would not be writing this review (first time I have bothered) except as I am very happy with the information and have learnt a lot from this book. Good value for money in my option. But please note although I collect vintage watches and presently have more than twenty I am a beginner at watch repair.
